This is the exact picture I have in mind when I talk about having a ‘place at the table’ in my challenging ableism when working with disability CPD.
1 single step is still inaccessible to wheelchair users
A ramp that’s too steep is still inaccessible to wheelchair users
A lift, but it’s broken is still inaccessible to wheelchair users
Cobblestones are very uncomfortable and therefore still inaccessible to wheelchair users
A drop kerb, but it's miles down the road not directly opposite where you want to cross is still inaccessible to wheelchair users
Cleaning equipment in the disabled toilet, makes in inaccessible to wheelchair users (and probably anyone else trying to use it)
It’s time to unlearn, relearn and bring into consciousness some of the difficulties wheelchair users (and other disabled and chronically ill people) face on a daily basis. Just taking a moment to consider how we’d get into a building takes some of the emotional labour off of us. Thank you.
